Biography for William Mead

I have been interested in making stuff all my life. In high school, I was the weirdo who hung out in the art room. Then I went to Parson's School of Design. It was the only college I applied to. After graduating in 1989 with a BFA and a focus on sculpture, I moved back to Massachusetts and attended Massachusetts College of Art to get my teaching certification.

However, I never really became an Art Teacher. At the time when I completed my program, Art Teaching jobs were almost as scarce as sculpture jobs. I managed to convince a hiring team in Needham that I knew something about computers, and became a Technology Assistant at the Pollard Middle School in 1992.

Technology in education went bonkers, and I was able to grow with the job, moving from Technology Assistant to Technology Specialist. The Internet spread like wildfire, everyone wanted to know more about what computers could do for them. It was a very exciting time in education for me and the combination of art, technology and teaching became very potent.

After eight years in Needham, I was ready for a new challenge and in the fall of 2000 accepted a position at Boston Arts Academy, a very dynamic environment for Boston students interested in the arts. At BAA, which was only three years old when I started, I was to teach graphic design half time and be a Technology Coordinator half time, with two people reporting directly to me. Well both halves became full time jobs, plus there was a great deal of design work to be done for the school. Needless to say, I was very busy.

However, I managed to continue to work on my own artistic and creative projects throughout it all, creating sculpture, music, and additional design projects.

After five years at Boston Arts Academy, my family decided to move to the west coast to be closer to extended family. This move gives me more time to explore design and artistic opportunities. I am currently living in Davis, California with my wife and son.
