Designing Postcards

Dance Postcards

I designed many postcards for Boston Arts Academy.  The highlight of each year, however, was the Springfest Dance Concert.  This is the Dance department's biggest event, attended by students, parents and many community members supportive of the arts and interested in various styles of dance.

The biggest challenge creating designs for these cards was developing the images for them.  Unfortunately, the school lacks a good space for photographing dancers.  This often resulted in photographs that were poorly lit and/or poorly composed.  It was my job to turn these photographs with potential into works of art.

Some years, the dances were more conceptual than others and I worked closely with the Dance Department Chair, Ms. Chan, to develop designs that reflected the ideas that drove the dance.  This resulted in some truly beautiful postcards that many people keep long after the event has ended.

Visual Art Postcards

Postcards for visual art shows were not a very big design challenge, as most simply had an image from the show on the cover of the card. The big challenge here was reproducing the work accurately and working with the printer to get a good proof and the final card out on time.

I always enjoy working with artists on presenting their work.  Many of these postcards are developed in collaboration with the artist, who has a vested interest in making his or her work look the best it can.

"You can always count on Bill to create magic with his graphic design. Bill has more than once transform my grainy photographs due to lack of light into artistic postcards for my concerts, resembling watercolor paintings or simply floating the dancers in mid-air."

" Bill is great to work with. He is calm and patient. He listens and captures the vision and idea you communicated to him and translates them into imaginative graphic design. The postcards he designed for me were all of the highest professional quality."
