Posters are probably the most difficult work to represent in this portfolio, as they are meant to be printed so much larger than this format. Size has a huge impact on design, and I really appreciated the opportunity to design work destined for such a large scale.
My process of designing a poster starts with understanding the event to be represented. Usually through interviewing the Director or Producer, I get a good sense of what their artistic intentions are and develop ideas for how to represent them. I usually produce a number of quick drafts to make sure we’re on the right track with the design, before a final design is determined.
Fresh Flags of America was a production created shortly after the World Trade Center bombing on September 11, 2001. It was meant to address the various feelings of different individuals amidst growing nationalism and the palpable public outrage caused by that horrible act of violence. I spent a lot of time looking at the American flag and how it is used in various designs for this poster.
William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night was produced, in this case, with a "Cirque du Soleil" theme and style in mind. The stage was transformed into a circus, and so the poster needed to reflect that dynamic and chaotic atmosphere. The images in the poster were developed working closely with the costume designer, who gave me swatches of fabric used in the costumes for the show. This poster is very striking printed large and is one of the pieces I am most proud of.
Grand Magic was less about magic and more about deception. The design for this poster came out of a number of discussions with the director, Rosalind Thomas-Clark, about the show and its meaning. The final poster was mysterious and really captured the feeling of the show. It is also very stunning printed large.

"Bill has an excellent eye for graphics. He came to our rescue on several occasions, producing eye-catching posters for our productions. He was able to meet deadlines, however tight, and always introduced the essence of the project into his design. Always a pleasure to work with Bill!
